The original(1956)
and the two 1975 editions were actually translated by Florence Cowan and
Dr. Willard Rhodes, and one had commentaries by Eunice
Pike, one of the two missionaries (the other Florence Cowan) who also helpped
in the translations and her and Florence Pike lived amongst the Mazatec
for many years. they were Radcliff bible scholars who translated the Mazatec
into text and then into Spanish and the Spanish into English for R. Gordon
and Valentina Wasson. Some of which had a little nahuautl which is the
language of the Mazatec.
So I am wondering which editions of this great record do you have?
Here are the three copies, the first one produced one in 1956 which was
the first record set and then the two in the 1975 period (A CASSETTE SET
WITH THE PICTURES and text included).
Here are their references from my bibliography of Entheogenic Fungi.
Sabina, Marìa. 1959. (Record). Mushroom Ceremony of the Mazatec
Indians of Mexico. Recorded by R. Gordon and Valentina Wasson with commentaries
by Eunice Pike and Sarah C. Godschinsky. Record # Fr.8975.

Maria Sabina. 1975a. (Casettes). María Sabina and her Mazatec

Wasson.

Maria Sabina. 1975b. (Casette). María Sabina and her Mazatec Mushroom
Velada. Record and book. Recorded by R. Gordon Wasson, Florence Cowan
and Willard Rhodes. Pr. cassette by Brace, Janovich and Harcourt. New
York.
$85.00.
And under the heading of Wasson and Wasson:
" Wasson, R. Gordon and Valentina P. Wasson. 1956. (Record). Mushroom Ceremony
of the Mazatec Indians of Mexico. Recorded by R. Gordon Wasson, with
translations by Eunice V. Pike and Sarah C. Cudschinsky. Folkway Records and
Service
Corporation, 121 West 47th Street, New York, New York. Record Listing
no. Fr8975.
Extracts of a mushroom ceremony recorded in Huautla de Jiménez."
And regarding your statement, "THE OCCASION WAS THE ILLNESS OF A
YOUTH. THE MUSHROOM, THROUGH THE MOUTH OF MARIA SABINA, A FEMALE SHAMAN,
DECREED
THAT THE BOY MUST DIE. HE HEARD THE BAD NEWS AND DIED DAYS LATER."
That boy in the life magazine was her son Aureulio. It was many years
later after that recording that the Maria Sabina saw her son murdered
and weeks
later he was (with a knife or gun), but i do not believe that is on those
tapes. That session in Huautla de Jiménez was for a different
illness. and the photo from the Life Magazine article of May 13, 1957
proclaims
her son Aurelio is lying therere in a state of ecstacy
He died years after those musical chants werets were recorded. not as you
quoted above. and he was murdered in Maria Sabina's own home.
How did you(Stephen L. Peele) get permission to promote those CD's?
I have been denied that permission for years and also I am also denied
any access to any Harvard Wason Materials from the harvard collections,
even though I have a note of permission from RGW. I was actually denied
permission by Lisa de Caesares and Masha Wasson Briton herself, whom in
the 1980s I had communicted with several times on the telephone from Hawaii.
